We Love Our Vet

My dogs have been blessed with excellent medical care throughout the years, both in Upstate NY and in Napa. Granted we have had a couple less than stellar experiences, but by and large the folks that have devoted their lives to saving animals are a special breed of human.

My dream as a child was to become a vet. I was always animal crazed. I was discouraged for the wrong reasons (being a woman..How could I ever have a family and that level of profession? For that expense, go to medical school!)

Yet now I wonder if I could really have been happy in this very demanding profession. I think I am better suited to training and helping dogs/families in a more holistic way.

I have the greatest respect for these folks. Sometimes they see abused or neglected animals or people who want to euthanize a pet for all the wrong reasons. I would have the hardest time keeping my mouth shut.

The hours are exhausting. They have to support not only the fur babies but their humans at some very difficult times. And I doubt they receive the thank yous they deserve.

I recently called my favorite vet my dog’s “Fairy GodVet.” Dr. Josephine, you know who you are. This lady saved Kimmie and her litter from what could have been a very different outcome. She operated on Rosie on a Sunday because that was when the surgery had to happen. Dr. Josephine has given me her personal cell which I must admit I have used more than a few times; I seem to always text the poor lady on her day off. Yesterday she got down on the floor with Orvie for his annual check up. She has known him since birth. We celebrated how he has become a gorgeous, healthy 15 month old.

I actually have three vet practices that I could use. I will do whatever I can to avoid seeing an emergency vet who does not know me or my dogs. And I have a couple of other fantastic folks in the wings, but Dr Josephine is the one I would always try to see first.

So my dear friends, please thank you vet. There is a serious vet shortage. Did I mention how very challenging this profession is? Suicide and depression have unfortunately claimed a few of these dedicated folks. They are all overworked at present. If you find a good one, hold on tight and thank your lucky stars!
