You need to consider size, level of shedding, age, the needed level of training, and most importantly the energy level. What is your budget? Do you want a known (purebred from reputable breeder), or is it more important to save a life even with unknown factors( shelter pup)? Should you consider a senior dog or a puppy? Both have advantages and disadvantages. This podcast is a great place to start answering those questons.

It also gives you helpful hints to tell if you are dealing with a slick website hiding a deplorable puppy mill. There is a special torture in the after life for people who own puppy mills or who use dogs to fight. We shut those down by educating ourselves.
